Days Until New Year
How long until the new year begins? This countdown shows the number of days left until January 1, along with the same time in weeks and in hours.
It also tells you which year is about to start and the weekday that New Year's Day falls on, which is handy when planning a party or time off.
How to use it
- Leave the start date as today for the current countdown.
- Change the date to see how many days will be left on a particular day, such as your last day of work for the year.
- Read the days, weeks, hours and the weekday of January 1 in the results.
How it works
Days until New Year = January 1 of the next year minus the start date.
If you start on January 1, the result is 0 because the new year has just begun. On December 31 the result is 1.
Hours are counted from midnight at the start of the chosen day, so they equal the days multiplied by 24. Leap years are handled automatically because the tool counts real calendar days.

Questions and answers
How many days are left in the year?
The number of days until New Year is the number of days left after the start date. For example, from December 1 there are 31 days to go.
Why are the hours a round number?
The hours are counted from midnight at the start of the date you choose, so each day adds exactly 24 hours. A live clock would also count the part of today that has already passed.
Does a leap year change the countdown?
Yes, a leap year has 366 days instead of 365, and the extra day, February 29, is counted when it falls between the start date and New Year.
What does the tool show on New Year's Day?
On January 1 the countdown shows 0 days because the new year has started. From January 2 it counts toward the following January 1.
Which time zone does the countdown use?
It uses the date on your device, so it matches the date where you are.
